Once we set our router up most people hardly think about it ever again. Some may be guilty of rushing through the router setup process and missing key steps. There are a view reasons why you should be more careful with how you set up your Asus router, and monitor it afterwards. The company called ASUSTeK is one that I would be aware of. As well as other things, they sell ASUS-branded wireless routers for home use. Some of their routers come with features called AiCloud and AiDisk, that allow people to attach a hard drive to their routers and create their own cloud storage. According to a FTC complaint, ASUS routers had major security issues that allowed hackers to hurt consumers in many ways, including getting access to confidential personal information, for example tax documents that people have stored through these cloud services.

If you are using an ASUS router at home, be sure to take the following recommendations seriously. Download the latest security updates for your router. The FTC says that the ASUS router update tool often said that software was current when it wasn’t, putting people’s personal networks at risk. Moving forward, ASUS is required to provide accurate information about software updates. So check the router’s software update tool and the ASUS support site again for the latest security updates.Check and make sure that access to your network storage is limited. Make sure access to AiCloud and AiDisk is limited to what your preference. The FTC found an issue with the default option during AiDisk’s set-up, which gave anyone on the Internet access to your personal storage. For more privacy, choose “limited” or “admin rights” access instead of the option“limitless.” Be sure to change the given pre-set passwords. The FTC accuses, the ASUS pre-set passwords on every router to be weak. So create new passwords that are strong and unique for both your router and any of your cloud services. This can help prevent hackers from getting easy access to your network. Be careful when setting up “cloud” features. Before enabling any sharing or storage features, research what those features actually and who will have access. Make sure access is limited to what you’re comfortable with. Take your time, and do not just click “next” during the setup process to speed it up. Speeding through the setup process could end up very costly. Review the default settings carefully before making a selection. Overall be on the lookup when doing anything online as there is always a risk of hackers.
